Police Make Arrest in Wilkinsburg Murder Where Body Was Found Near School
WILKINSBURG (AP/KDKA) -- Police have arrested a man in connection with the murder of Regis Jones in Wilkinsburg.
A custodian found a Jones' bullet-riddled body in an alley in Wilkinsburg around 6:25 a.m. on Thursday morning.
The body was found on a walkway between Sister Thea Bowman School and the St. James church structure on Rebecca Avenue. The Allegheny County medical examiner says Jones had been shot multiple times. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
From video surveillance, police say they were able to determine that a shooting had happened in the area around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday. Police had responded to a report of shots being fired two blocks from where the victim was found around 11:45 p.m. Wednesday, but they didn't find anything at the time. Police say they are not sure if the two incidents are connected.
Around 1:00 a.m. on Friday, Shauntel Studvant was booked into the Allegheny County Jail on homicide charges. Surveillance video from the school and several other city cameras captured Studvant and Jones walking down the street together.
According to the criminal complint, Studvant told police he tried to rob Jones while the walked down the walkway between the school and the church. Studvant said Jones sold marijuana and had drugs and money on him. Studvant claims there was a struggle for the gun and he was able to get it from Jones and that's when he shot him several times.
According to the complaint, Studvant said he ran from the scene and ended up tossing the gun into the river.
He was booked into the Allegheny County Jail on homicide charges, as well as tampering with evidence charges and charges of illegally possessing a gun.
