Armed Driver Flees From Police, Crashes At Former Civic Arena Site

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A police chase ended with the armed suspect's car smashing through a fence above the former site of the Civic Arena on Thursday evening.

Authorities say it started around 8:30 p.m. on Memory Lane and Bedford Avenue in Hill District.

According to officials, 44-year-old Raymont Wright of the Hill District spotted an unmarked police vehicle and sped off.

"The car eventually made its way down here and went through the fence, into the parking lot here where the Civic Arena once was," said Sonya Toler, of the Pittsburgh Public Safety Department. "There was no serious injury to the driver."

Wright was checked out at UPMC Mercy Hospital and then taken into custody by police.

The car was totaled in the crash.

"We don't know how many people he passed as he was speeding away from the officers, but luckily he did not harm anyone in his flight," said Toler.

Police say Wright was armed when he got out of his car.

"He did get out of the vehicle with a gun in his hand, but did comply with the officers demands to drop the gun and get on the ground," Toler added.

There's no word yet on what charges he will face.

Two parked cars were also damaged in the crash.
