Angie's List Tips For Maintenance On Your Brakes

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Do your holiday plans include hitting the road and traveling?

If so, you'll want to make sure your car's brakes are ready to make the trip.

Many people will be traveling this holiday season and you want to be sure your car is going to get you to your destination.

"The last thing you want is to break down with all the family in the car and the presents. It can be an utter disaster. Take your car into the mechanic for a once over before you hit the road," Angie Hicks, from Angie's List, said.

Although cars are more reliable than ever, you should pay careful attention to the sound of your brakes.

"You'll hear a screeching noise that will sometimes go away when you apply the brakes or only occur when you apply the brakes," mechanic Fred Kuhn said.

Your brakes are one of the most important parts of your car if they start to make new noises, schedule an appointment with your mechanic right away.

"That grinding noise means uh-oh you've gone a little bit too long and that usually requires replacing the brake rotors also," Kuhn said.

If your car is vibrating or pulsing when you push the brake pedal you could need new brake pads.

"Brake pads from different companies start off anywhere from $100 up to $200, $300, it depends on the make and the model of the car." Kuhn said.

If you don't have a mechanic already, look for someone who is an expert with the type of car you have. They will have the right equipment to check over and fix your car.

"Find that mechanic preferably before you have a big issue like your brakes. Use them for oil changes, that way you know you have a rapport and they know your car," Hicks said.
