PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- An inmate and two guards were taken to the hospital after a smoky fire broke out at the Allegheny County Jail on Monday night.

Correctional officers on the sixth floor saw smoke coming from a cell around 10:30 p.m., a spokesperson for the jail said. Although there was no "active fire," the jail's spokesperson said the fire alarm was activated.

The people housed on the unit were evacuated as Pittsburgh firefighters responded.

The jail's medical team evaluated everyone and sent three people to the hospital for smoke inhalation. The inmate and the two correctional officers were treated and released and returned to the facility before the end of shift, said the jail's spokesperson.

KDKA-TV's news crew at the scene didn't see any smoke or flames, but saw medics bringing one person out of the jail on a stretcher.

The fire marshal and Allegheny County police also responded and are investigating. There's been no word on the cause of the fire.

According to Allegheny County's website, the jail currently houses about 1,600 people.
