$1,800 Coffee Machine Order Leads To Changes In Mayor's Office

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – New changes are taking place in Mayor Bill Peduto's office after word got out that nearly $2,000 was spent on a coffee machine, raising some eyebrows.

It's the Multi-Max Single Cup vending machine.

The mayor's chief innovation officer ordered the machine – it costs about $1,800.

Monday, the mayor's Chief of Staff, Kevin Acklin, promised that won't happen again.

"That was something that happened without our knowledge," Acklin said. "That was something consistent with existing city policy, an invoice sent to council under $2,000. Once we heard about it, we took care of it and cancelled it. We're looking to make sure something like that never happens again."

In doing so, the city put new checks and balances in place today, so every future purchase under $2,000 is looked at.

"We're entering into Act 47," said Acklin. "We are freezing pay. We need to make sure that expenditures are occurring in our departments, we have sufficient controls on those expenses."
