Trial Begins For Parents After Tot Left At South Philadelphia Robbery Scene
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Jury selection is underway in the trial of a Philadelphia couple accused of using their four-year-old son as a decoy during a violent South Street jewelry store robbery in February of last year.
The store owner testified at earlier hearings that the couple came into the store claiming to want an engagement ring but Benson took off with a tray of rings and Stubbs held the door before they fled in different directions.
Benson allegedly slashed the owner during a chase and abandoned his son on the street.
The child (right), who was not injured, is now living with another family member.
Opening statements and the start of testimony in the case are expected tomorrow. Both defendants, who have pleaded not guilty, remain in custody. Their attorneys declined comment.
