The Birth of KYW Newsradio: September 21, 1965

September 21, 1965 is the day the music died on KYW Radio.
At noon on that Wednesday afternoon 45 years ago, KYW launched its celebrated "ALL NEWS. ALL THE TIME" format.
The last records on KYW Radio that day were introduced by legendary Philadelphia personality Bill "Wee Willie" Webber, who died in May of this year at the age of 80. Exactly at 12 o'clock, news anchor Steve Porter began the first ever KYW Newsradio newscast.

The newscast included a story about a then Special Assistant State Attorney General -- Arlen Specter -- and his investigation of Philadelphia's magistrate system. In November of 1965, Specter was elected Philadelphia District Attorney before his election to the U.S. Senate from Pennsylvania.
In June of 2010, the Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia helped celebrate KYW Newsradio's 45th anniversary with a special luncheon and reunion of some of the past and present members of the KYW Newsradio family.
