South Jersey Market Hosts Second Annual 'Egg Nog Off'
MARLTON, N.J. (CBS) -- It was the battle over the best egg nog Saturday in Burlington County, New Jersey.
The second annual "Egg Nog Off" was held at Rastelli's Market Fresh in Marlton.
Lauren Rastelli says their egg nog contest is a big deal in the store.
"Egg nog is a huge tradition in the Rastelli family! My uncle has been making it for years and it's a family secret passed-down recipe," she says. "We love it so much, so last year, we're like, 'we have an obsession with egg nog, I wonder if other people do too?' So we decided to do a contest and we called it the Nog Off."
And Ray Rastelli, Market CEO and founder of the market, says the competition seems to really be taking off this year.
"Last year, we had about 15 contestants, this year we have about 25," he says, "so it's growing."
Among this year's competitors was last year's defending egg nog champion, George.
"It's a spiritual thing for me to be with people that admire my egg nog," he says.
Ray says participants present their concoctions to the judges who pick the top three drinks.
"The judges are scoring them based on taste, texture, flavor, on the story as well," he says.
So what makes for an award-winning egg nog?
"Well, I think it depends who you talk to," Ray says. "Some people think it's the alcohol, but what I think is critical is the type of vanilla ice cream that is used in the egg nog."
The three winners received gift cards to Rastelli's Market.
