#SMdayPHL: Social Media Day Celebrated In Philly

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Mashable launched Social Media Day in 2010 as a way to recognize social media's impact on global communication.

Every day is essentially Social Media Day, but June 30th marks the seventh global celebration.

Cassandra Bailey -- the CEO of Slice Communications -- believes Philadelphia is a world class city and deserves world class Social Media Day. So she started one…

"People all around the world celebrate Social Media Day," she says, "and we wanted to make sure that we were doing it in a way that respected the social media and marketing community that is here which is vibrant, active, alive and growing."

She says the goal is to create a community where marketing and communications people from the Philadelphia area can get together, share best practices, learn from each other and explore new data and information, so they can get ahead of what's coming next:

"We think of social media as a coordinating media which is why it's so important so anything that you are doing in marketing -- if you are running an ad campaign or you have billboards or commercials or you're putting on an event or you're doing something in PR -- all of that can be and should be supported by social media. Social Media should be that platform that helps you coordinate and get out to new and different audiences, everything that you're doing in your entire marketing plan."

The Franklin Institute is hosting the event this year and speakers from all over, including representatives from Twitter, Comcast, and Curalate.

"So what this day has shown us is that there is a tremendous appetite for information and new education around social media," says Bailey, "so we expect next year to be even bigger and better and we expect Philadelphia will take its rightful place on the national stage as a hub and a center of smart people talking about and using social media for business and marketing."
