Reading Terminal Market Hosts Festival Of Forgotten Foods
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The Reading Terminal Market, itself a Philadelphia tradition, explores some of the region's lesser-known food traditions this coming Saturday.
From a vinegar-marinated soft drink called Raspberry Shrub, which Ben Franklin quaffed, to pepper pot soup, a dozen "forgotten foods" will be served up Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Market's Center Court.
Raspberry Shrub is one of two additions to the menu in this second fest. Market spokeswoman Sarah Levitsky says the other involves a wild, indigenous fruit called the paw paw.
"It's a fruit that used-to be very common, and they are truly a special food. Bassett's Ice Cream has asked the folks at Fair Food if they would have their paw paw collectors go out and get some of the fruit and they've made it in to ice cream."
Other foods include fried catfish on a waffle with pepper hash and Cape May Salt Oysters.
