Police: Suspect In Custody In Assault, Robbery Of Temple University Professor

By Dan Wing and Tim Jimenez

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Philadelphia Police say a suspect is in custody in connection with the assault and robbery of an 81-year old Temple University Professor earlier this week (see related story)

Authorities say 45-year old Darryl Moon was taken into custody late Thursday morning, but details of how or where he was apprehended have not been released.

Temple University spokesman Ray Betzner says now, there's a sigh of relief on campus.

"We sent out to the community saying that we were pleased to report that police had captured Darryl Moon, the suspect in Tuesday's assault in Anderson Hall. We also want to thank members of the Temple University community for their help during the investigation," Betzner said.

Police put out a warrant for Moon's arrest Wednesday, saying Moon somehow got inside of Anderson Hall on Temple's campus Tuesday morning, and made his way to the 2nd floor. There he went after the 81-year old professor inside of his office, punching the elderly man and holding a knife to his throat while demanding the victim's wallet. Once the professor handed it over, Moon punched him one more time before making his getaway.

"We just want to thank police that worked with Temple Police on this. It was very, very much a multi-jurisdictional effort. And we're very grateful they were able to capture this guy so quickly," Betzner said.

Betzner says the injured victim had to be hospitalized and is recovering. He also says the increased security presence, ordered after the attack, will continue and they're always looking at ways to improve.

"As long as people feel like it's needed and so long as we feel that it's needed too," Betzner said.

Police say Moon has 16 prior arrests for robberies, assaults and thefts. He is facing charges of Aggravated Assault, Robbery, Criminal Trespass, PIC, Terroristic Threats, Theft, Simple Assault and REAP.

Moon was arraigned overnight Thursday and his bail was set at $500,000. His next court date is scheduled for November 15, 2013.
