Philly Corrections Officers Charged With Assaulting Inmate, Covering Up Incident
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Three corrections officers have been charged with assaulting an inmate back in June, and then trying to cover up the incident.
This allegedly happened at the Philadelphia Industrial Correctional Center on State Road.
The District Attorney's office says officers Milton Gibbs and Terrance Bailey allegedly entered the victim's cell and began punching and kicking him, before handcuffing the inmate and walking him down a staircase and striking him along the way.
He was taken to another area, where Officer Shaun Lowe allegedly joined in stomping the victim.
Afterwards, Gibbs and Bailey submitted a mental health referral claiming the victim had harmed himself, and attempted to keep the inmate quiet by bribing him with food.
Assistant District Attorney Andrew Wellbrock says the officers are all facing charges.
"In this case it was an inmate facing somewhat serious charges. He didn't deserve this. He deserved to be treated with respect, and as prosecutors we need to hold everyone accountable."
All three officers have been suspended without pay pending the outcome of the charges against them.
