Philadelphia Eagles Hope The Force Awakens Sunday Night Vs. Arizona

By Kevin McGuire

The Philadelphia Eagles have the best chance to win the NFC East among the four teams in the division. Tied with Washington and New York with identical 6-7 records (pitiful), the Eagles have a chance to score a bit of breathing room if they can pull off a home win against the high-powered Arizona Cardinals on Sunday night.

Eagles Have To Be All-In With Sam Bradford, For Now

After winning two straight games to set up a favorable position in the NFC East Division race, the Eagles clearly have to be all in with quarterback Sam Bradford. He certainly has gained the respect of his teammates after coming back from a concussion and shoulder injury to help lead the team to two key wins.

"The value of him to this team is second to none," tight end Zach Ertz said this week on PhiladelphiaEagles.com. "When he's playing at a high level, I think everyone else on the offense is able to follow that, and I think he did that today."

If the Eagles manage to get to the playoffs as division champions, Bradford will make for quite an interesting contract discussion in the offseason and the Eagles may feel inclined to negotiate with him to bring him back in 2016. Does this mean the Eagles have to buy in on Bradford as a more long-term solution? Absolutely not, although they may have to find a way to work on a short-term deal if they can convince Bradford to accept it. The future of the position resides in the NFL; and no matter what happens between now and the end of the regular season, nothing will change that.

How The Eagles Make The Playoffs

By now, you surely are aware there is only one team from the NFC East making the NFC playoffs; so the Eagles must win the division in order to keep a slim Super Bowl dream alive. Regardless of the result of Sunday night's game against Arizona, the Eagles will still control their own path to the postseason. Here is the breakdown of how the Eagles make the playoffs:

  • Eagles are in with three wins in next three games, no questions asked
  • Eagles lose to Arizona, but beat Washington and New York
  • Eagles beat Arizona and New York but lose to Washington AND Washington loses vs. Bills and at Dallas
  • Eagles beat Arizona and Washington but lose to New York AND New York loses vs. Carolina or at Minnesota
  • Eagles beat Washington AND Washington loses vs. Bills or at Dallas AND New York loses to Carolina and Minnesota AND Dallas loses one game

Got it? This will be updated and become clearer each passing week at this stage of the season.

Eagles To Wear All-Black Vs. Cardinals

In college, Chip Kelly was used to having his Oregon Ducks wear different uniforms every week of the season. In the NFL, things are a bit different, as each NFL franchise is only allowed three uniforms; home, away and one alternate to be worn a restricted number of times. On Sunday night the Eagles will wear their alternate black uniforms. As previously noted, the Eagles are 2-1 all-time in their alternate look, which includes a win over the New York Giants earlier this season in a primetime matchup. These uniforms are designed purely to generate buzz and sell some merchandise, but wouldn't it be nice if the Eagles used their alternate uniform opportunity to tap into the roots and history of the franchise a bit more, perhaps by donning some kelly green? The problem is the NFL does not allow teams to wear alternate helmets, something not restricted in college. That's a shame, because it would be fun to see the Eagles in a kelly green or even a white helmet with the updated wing pattern on it.
