UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (CBS) -- A split Penn State University board of trustees today voted to continue compliance with the NCAA sanctions that followed the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandal.

During a morning teleconference, the Penn State Board of Trustees voted 19-8 to continue to comply with the NCAA sanctions, which include a $60-million fine, obliteration of their wins from 1998 to 2011, and a four-year ban on postseason play.

A group of alumni-backed trustees proposed an amendment that would have deleted a promise to comply.

But trustee Rick Dandrea was among those who opposed the change.

"I think it would be a huge mistake to retreat from that commitment, and do not believe that we should wordsmith this resolution to dilute that motion at all," he said.

The trustees -- asked for input to a possible federal settlement over how the fine can be spent -- endorsed spending the money within Pennsylvania.
