New Study Links Internet Exposure And Depression
By Dr. Brian McDonough
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The rate of suicide among young people is on the rise, and some are concerned the internet could play a part.
Now, there's a new study out of Oxford University that has taken a look at that issue, and what they've found is that there may be some truth to the fact that internet exposure can be linked to depression and suicide for young people who are already thinking about it.
According to the study, those who went to find out more about self-harm and suicide were actually exposed to violent images and methods via the internet, and they could act out what they saw on-line.
The study also suggests that health care providers consider discussing online content with their young patients, especially if they are depressed and dealing with very serious issues.
