PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A father was shot in the neck on South Street Sunday night while running away from robbery suspects. The man's wife and their one-year-old baby escaped harm, also running away from the suspects.

The husband is expected to survive. Police say the gunman fired just one shot, which struck the victim in the neck.

The father was able to run away down South Street to get help.

"It was a gun, very loud, one shot," neighbor William Fassett said.

Surveillance video captured the husband running for his life with his wife, carrying their baby, right behind him.

Police say the family was held up at gunpoint in an attempted robbery.

According to police, the family had just parked around 7:45 p.m. Sunday on the 600 block of 12th Street, when two men wearing dark clothes approached the husband after he exited the vehicle.

"He hears a shot and then realizes that it's him that's shot in the neck," Philadelphia Police captain Sekou Kinebrew said.

The 25-year-old father is expected to survive.

The brazen shooting sent shock waves to residents living on busy, iconic South Street.

"It stinks, it's right in your neighborhood," neighbor Caleb Wahrenberger said. "It's a shame to see, because I feel like the area keeps getting better and better but I guess you still gotta be careful out there."

"Thankfully, the child wasn't hurt and the mother wasn't hurt, but again we do have someone shot in the neck and that's bad enough as it is," Kinebrew said.

The dad is listed in stable condition at Jefferson Hospital.

Although he was shot in the neck, he was able to speak and give a statement to police.
