Longtime Delco DA Aide Going To Jail For Betrayal Of Trust

MEDIA, Pa. (CBS) - A veteran aide in the Delaware County District Attorney's office pleaded guilty Thursday and was sentenced to jail after admitting she stole hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash seized over the years during drug investigations.

Senior Judge William Nicholas called the actions of 49-year-old Mary Lynch "an utter betrayal of trust."

She cried in the courtroom and offered no excuses for her behavior as she admitted to stealing more than $715,000 in cash from the DA's drug forfeiture accounts.

That was money seized by police departments from drug dealers and in drug raids over a period of years. Lynch, who worked for the county for 29 years, was sentenced to three to six years in state prison, then years of probation. and ordered to pay back the money.

She used some of it to buy concert tickets to Bob Dylan and Taylor Swift shows and for premium seats for Philadelphia Flyers games.

"She has a significant amount of remorse over what's happened and it's personally and professionally embarrassing for her," says her defense attorney, Andrew Edelberg. "On the other hand, she's taking responsibility for what occurred."

DA Jack Whalon knew Lynch even before he became the county's top prosecutor. Her office was right next to his..

"All things considered it was a fair sentence," he said. "It's a person who's never spent a day in jail going into a state penitentiary, which is, needless to say, significant."
