Judge: New Jersey Man Was Insane When He Killed Woman

MAYS LANDING, N.J. (AP) - A man who fatally stabbed his 88-year-old neighbor and wounded two others at a New Jersey retirement community has been found not guilty by reason of insanity.

State Superior Court Judge Max Baker issued his ruling Wednesday following a nonjury trial.

He said 66-year-old Anthony Milano of Linwood would be committed to an undisclosed psychiatric facility.

Milano was charged with murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault and a weapons offense after the October 2009 attacks at the Village at Linwood, about five miles west of Atlantic City.

Atlantic County prosecutors say Milano attacked Catherine McGowan and her daughter, 60-year-old Diane Nehmad, outside McGowan's apartment. Another resident, 84-year-old Eugene Pepper, was wounded when he tried to intervene.

Residents said Milano acted erratically and feuded with his neighbors.
