Couple Who 'Gifted' Daughters To Man Sentenced Up To 7 Years In Prison

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. (CBS) -- A married couple charged for "gifting" their daughters to a man who was later convicted of sexually abusing the six girls was sentenced to prison on Wednesday.

A Bucks County judge did not mince words, nor did he show leniency, when it came to sentencing Daniel and Savilla Stoltzfus for gifting their children to 52-year-old Lee Kaplan.

The couple gave up their oldest daughter to Kaplan in exchange for financial help.

The parents will now spend up to seven years in prison, the maximum sentence allowed by law. Kaplan sexually assaulted the six girls.

"The sentence was appropriate, obviously based on what she did," said Bucks County Deputy District Attorney Kate Kohler. "And as a parent, I don't know how you can do that to your child."

Daniel Stolzfus pleaded no contest during his April trial. His wife, Savilla Stoltzfus, pleaded guilty in the case and convinced her daughters to come forward against Kaplan.

Kaplan has been convicted of multiple counts of child rape.

Lawyers for Savilla Stolzfus were hoping for a lighter sentence in light of her cooperation with the prosecution.

"We didn't understand the breadth or the depravity of this case until Savilla came forward, until she sat in that room in the district attorney's office in October of last year and convinced those children to tell their story," said defense attorney Craig Penglase.

The judge continued to stress the depravity of a case that now leaves the couple's nine children irreparably scarred.

Several of the girls testified Kaplan had sex with them and they considered him their husband.

The 14-year-old daughter had two children by Kaplan.

All of this happened under the guidance of their parents who lived with Kaplan over the course of a four-year period. All of the kids are now in the custody of the state.

"I know that they are in therapy right now and I hope that their future will be brighter," said Kohler.

The couple's 18-year-old daughter asked for leniency for her parents.

Kaplan will be sentenced in September.
