Cystitis - Canine Bladder Infections
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Canine bladder infection or cystitis is an inflammation of the urinary bladder and is almost always caused by bacteria in the bladder. However, bladder stones, diabetes or tumors can also be the cause. These infections may be more common in females than males and more often in senior dogs, but can occur at any time in life. And can occur in cats as well.
Watch for any changes in behavior. Symptoms may include increased and sometimes painful urinations, blood in the urine, increased water intake, and at times the inability to control the bladder, or difficulty urinating.
If you suspect your pet is suffering from a bladder infection, make an appointment to see your vet immediately. Bladder infections need to be treated with antibiotics by your vet. If left untreated, bladder infections become more severe, cause extreme pain and inflammation as well as lead to even more serious conditions such as kidney infections or even septicemia, (the presence of bacteria in the bloodstream) becoming systemic and spreading throughout the body. Diagnosis is determined by a urinalysis.
Prevent infections from occurring by walking your dog on a regular schedule daily, providing adequate access for relief throughout the day and keeping the area clean.
