Cell Phone-Controlled Locks Could Make Keys History
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Fumbling for your house keys in the dark could be a thing of the past, as long as you can grab your cell phone.
Keys may a thing of the past. Some cars have keyless entry (even ignition) and the lock maker Schlage has a system that just begins with a wireless lock and can be expanded throughout the house.
The locks remain top notch but the physical key is a relic, says Paige Muhlencamp, Schlage brand manager. "I think it's really a sign that we're moving and progressing. We expect technology to easy and integrated into our daily lives and I think this is just one example of how easy this is becoming."
Muhlencamp says the programs can do more than open your doors.
"Either through your computer or an app on your cell phone, you can do things like check to see if your door is locked or unlocked. You can adjust your temperature on your thermostat, as well as adjust lighting, all kinds of devices within the home."
Muhlencamp says this system uses existing doors, but with replacement locks based on Schlage's electronic platform. It has up to 19 codes and even keeps track of who uses them. If you lose your phone or its battery dies, there's a push button override.
