A.J. Brown, Nick Sirianni have heated exchange in Philadelphia Eagles' wild-card round loss to 49ers
A.J. Brown and Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni had a heated exchange on the sideline during Philadelphia's 23-19 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the wild-card round Sunday.
In the second quarter, Brown had two passes intended for him that fell incomplete. The second pass on third-and-9 hit Brown's fingertips, but he dropped it, and the Eagles were forced to punt.
After the play, Sirianni and Brown were seen on the broadcast getting in each other's faces. Another clip showed Brown jawing toward Sirianni and being held back by his teammates.
Sirianni said he was trying to get Brown off the field because the Eagles were punting.
"I love A.J., I think he knows how I feel about him," Sirianni said. "I have a special relationship with him. We've probably went through every emotion you can possibly have together. We've laughed, we've cried together, we've yelled at each other. We're both emotional, and I was trying to get him off the field. That happens in this game, but I love him."
After the game, Brown went around to a bunch of teammates in the locker room, hugged them and left without speaking to the media.
Brown had underwhelming performance vs. the Niners.
On Philadelphia's final drive, Brown dropped a pass on third-and-five from quarterback Jalen Hurts that went right through his hands. He was bailed out on the next play after tight end Dallas Goedert hauled in a pass to extend the drive, but the Eagles eventually turned the ball over on downs.
Brown finished the game with three catches for 25 yards on seven targets.
"He's got the best hands I ever seen," Sirianni said. "The amount of catches he's made. When you get as many targets as he does, you're going to have some drops. Not ever using an excuse, but the ball moves differently in the wind. I thought Jalen did a good job of cutting the wind a lot of times, but yeah, we had some uncharacteristic drops."
