PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A vehicle was stolen as a 6-year-old boy sat in the back seat in West Oak Lane Wednesday. The child was found safe and the stolen car has been recovered, but the suspects remain on the run.

It all happened on the 7500 block of East Tulpehocken Street. The nightmare ended a few blocks away at West Cheltenham Avenue and Maryland Road.

The car was found at 3rd and Fisher, and fortunately the boy is OK.

Eyewitness News was there as he returned home from Northwest Detectives.

The man he was with during the carjacking said they were too shaken up to speak.

It was an all-out blitz to find the vehicle that, police say, was stolen at gunpoint by four armed men. In the back at the time was some precious cargo: a 6-year-old boy and another adult.

Police say the four suspects approached a silver 2006 Mercedes SUV around 5 p.m. on East Walnut Lane in Germantown.

Within an hour, police rushed to the intersection of West Cheltenham Avenue and Maryland Road. That's where the boy and the second passenger were allowed to leave the SUV.

The boy's mother told Eyewitness News that he walked home, where he was picked up by police and brought to Northwest Detectives.

Officers escorted the 6-year-old into the police station in hopes of getting more information about the people who stole the car he was in.

So far, no arrests have been made.
