1 Pennsauken Firehouse Closed Due to Budget Cuts
by KYW's David Madden
A tight budget has forced Pennsauken, NJ to close one of its six fire stations.
Officials of the township fire department figures they can get down to three firehouses and still provide residents with protection that meets national standards, according to deputy mayor Jack Killion:
"We've looked at this thing very extensively. We would not jeopardize anybody in our town by closing this station. We wouldn't close this station if we didn't think we could provide the same, if not better, service."
Closing the Highland station saves Pennsauken about $43,000 a year. The five remaining stations will still be staffed by 18 paid firefighters and 125 volunteers.
Between that and mutual aid agreements with neighboring towns, Killion is convinced that residents have nothing to worry about.
