New Jersey Trooper Helps Save Infant With Use Of AED

ALEXANDRIA TOWNSHIP, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A New Jersey State Trooper is being hailed a hero for saving the life of an infant in Alexandria Township earlier this month.

State police said when trooper Benjamin Hockin arrived at the home just before 6:50 a.m. on Oct. 3, he found 8-month-old Lila Wolfram unresponsive and not breathing.

Hockin immediately rushed to get his Automated External Defibrillator (AED) from his troop car, police said.

Before Hockin had arrived, a local family doctor responded and began CPR.

Hockin administered one shock and then continued CPR until Milford-Holland EMS got to the home, police said. First responders administered a second shock before taking over CPR duties.

Lila was rushed to Hunterdon County Medical Center and then Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where she is expected to make a full recovery, state police said.

"Trooper Hockin's quick and decisive actions are a credit to him and the New Jersey State Police," said Colonel Rick Fuentes, Superintendent of the New Jersey State Police. "There is nothing more rewarding or meaningful than to save a life. This is a memorable start to a bright and promising career."

Doctors and paramedics have also commended Hockin for his life-saving efforts, which helped keep Lila alive.
