Eastward freeze

Millions are caught in an icy grip as temperatures plummet to single digits. Fast-moving snow is heading east. CBS News correspondent Dean Reynolds reports on the sub-zero temperatures taking hold of the Midwest.

Search expanding

Investigators in Indonesia wrapped up a 10th day of searching for the wreckage of AirAsia Flight 8501 today, but as crews try to find and recover the victims, weather and currents are dragging the wreckage of the Airbus 320 to the east. CBS News correspondent Jeff Pegues reports that Indonesian authorities are hoping the expanded search area will also help them locate the plane's "black boxes."

Youngest ever

When the new Congress gets sworn in today, it will include the most diverse group in history, with a record number of minorities and women. Elise Stefanik, a Republican from northern New York, becomes the youngest woman ever to serve. In a story you'll see only on "CBS This Morning," co-host Norah O'Donnell sat down with Stefanik to look at her groundbreaking achievement.

Virginia fraud

Former Virginia Governor Robert McDonnell will be sentenced this morning for corruption after his conviction on 11 counts related to conspiracy to commit fraud. McDonnell's convictions could be used in constructive ways by other states.

Free to forgive

Nearly four weeks ago, Ricky Jackson was exonerated after spending 39 years in prison -- serving the longest sentence for a wrongful conviction in U.S history. Today, Jackson is reclaiming his life -- studying for his driver's test and signing up for a library card. But there was something else he needed to do: forgive the man who put him behind bars.

Not too late

It's hardly too late to make some New Year's resolutions, so why not come up with a few to improve your finances? Setting financial goals at the beginning of the year is a good way to start, and doing so now gives you time to measure your progress.

A new diet pill in development that tricks the body into thinking it's eaten a satisfying meal may pave the way for a new generation of weight loss aids.

Tagging sharks

New research on sharks is challenging our views of the predators. Over the last year, scientists in Hawaii tagged and tracked more than 30 tiger sharks. The findings show they gather in popular areas for surfers and swimmers. CBS News Correspondent Chip Reid got a first-hand look at the danger, meeting with one of the scientists and a victim of a shark attack.
