Minnesotans are enjoying cheaper gas prices than drivers in most other states.
Many families will be traveling this weekend with Education Minnesota Days, or what used to be called MEA weekend. School shuts down in most places on Thursday and Friday this week and a lot of families have planned vacations around it.
Gas prices are in the news again. But this time they're going down. Gas has dropped below $3 a gallon at several stations across the metro.
Prices at the pump have been dropping lately, something many drivers around the metro have probably noticed.
While millions of us will be hitting the roads this holiday weekend, bear in mind that nearly 400 law enforcement agencies will be stepping up their patrols, looking for drunk drivers. A DWI offense can mean losing your driver's license for up to a year, thousands of dollars in costs and possible jail time.
If you're heading out of town for the holiday weekend, now might be a good time to fill up on gas. The average cost of a gallon of gas in Minnesota is $3.33. That's down from $3.49 one year ago.
Drivers are in for a bit of good news. The average price for a gallon of gas has steadily dropped over the last month. The national average is now $3.52, according to AAA
More than 40 million Americans are expected to travel somewhere this 4th of July holiday weekend and if you're going by car, expect it to cost you. Gas prices are at a six-year high!
If you're getting ready to gas up for a trip up north this weekend, be prepared to pay a little more at the pump. Gas prices have risen on average by about 15 cents per gallon in the Twin Cities during the past week.

Temperatures aren't the only thing on the rise. Gas prices have gone up 12 cents in the past week to about $3.34 a gallon. Some stations are even nearing the $3.50 mark. Nationally, officials said gas prices are the highest they've been since October and they will likely continue to climb.
In the new year, Minnesota drivers are paying more at the pumps than a year ago. The average price statewide is $3.24 a gallon. That compares to $3.07 this time last year.
Disbelief? Shock? Joy? All of the above apply when it comes to filling up at the gas pump these days. AAA Minnesota reports an average price of $3 per gallon in the Twin Cities metro area.

Drivers have a little more money in the bank this week. Gas is on average $3.30 a gallon. A month ago, it was 45-cents higher, and experts predicted prices would stay high. Renae Jackson of Burnsville fills up twice a week. "On a regular basis, we drive to school, I drive him to school, daycare, dance, soccer," Johnson said.
According to AAA, the average cost of gas has been more than $3 per gallon for 1,000 days straight. It's the longest streak ever for gas prices at this level. Right now, the average in Minnesota is $3.50 per gallon, slightly lower than the national average of $3.54 per gallon. Bob Darbelnet, president and CEO of AAA, says kiss the days of cheaper gas prices goodbye. "Paying less than $3 per gallon for gasoline may be automotive history for most Americans, like using 8-track tapes or going to a drive-in movie," Darbelnet said.
Just in time for our last-minute summer road trips, it appears Minnesota gas prices have started to drop. In fact, they've fallen more than 10 cents in the last week. Some gas stations in areas around the Twin Cities are seeing prices as low as $3.33 a gallon.
