It's hard to believe, but it's already winter state tournament season in Minnesota high school sports. Just last week, state champions were crowned at the State Dance Competition at Target Center as well as the State Alpine and Nordic Ski Championships at Giant's Ridge in Biwabik, Minn.
When the snow is piled so high that your neighborhood is almost unrecognizable, why not grab your friends and pile on. While the kids built snow forts and had snowball fights in one Champlin neighborhood, the adults worked by clearing sidewalks and driveways. Katie Matzke says the milder temperatures make this storm much easier to endure. "Today is just great. The kids can get out and have so much fun in the snow, and get some of their wiggles out, whereas before when it was so cold they couldn't even go outside," Matzke said. "I mean, it was just plain too dangerous.
Friends gathered for a candlelight vigil at the Maple Grove Arboretum Saturday night to remember the two people killed after a high-speed chase on Highway 212 last week. Police shot and killed 36-year-old Matthew Serbus of Brooklyn Center and 34-year-old Dawn Pfister of Delavan, Wis. Their deaths followed a chase with police though Eden Prairie on Highway 212 on Feb. 7. "It's just really shocking," said Serbus' friend Sarah Higgins. "You never think that's going to happen to someone you know."

The University of Minnesota Duluth Department of Intercollegiate Athletics has set up a fund in memory of former Bulldog softball player Mandy Matula. The UMD Softball 1 Four Mandy Matula Fund was established in partnership with Matula's family. The fund will provide financial support for the Bulldog softball program. An Eden Prairie man was arrested Friday and charged with three counts of criminal vehicular homicide in connection with a fatal crash in August. According to the Hennepin County Attorney's office, 46-year-old Randoll Guy Sloan was arrested on a criminal warrant for driving while under the influence of alcohol, having a blood-alcohol concentration greater than .08 and for driving in a "grossly negligent manner." The complaint says on Aug. 1, Sloan was driving a Chevrolet Corvette with passenger Kyle Boline on Eden Prairie Road. At around 7:45 p.m., the Corvette didn't take a curve and ended up striking a power pole. The car flipped, and both passengers were ejected. Boline died to hours later at Hennepin County medical Center. Sloan was treated for a broken leg and "significant cuts to the head," according to the criminal complaint.
Minnesota Vikings cornerback Chris Cook has been fined $26,250 for contact with an official, per NFL guidelines. Cook told reporters Wednesday his agent has filed an appeal with the league. He said he realizes he has to keep his composure in those situations and added a "guarantee it will not happen again."
