Wis. Girl, 17, Unaware Of Pregnancy Gives Birth In Bathroom

RACINE, Wis. (AP/WCCO) -- Racine police say their investigation into a report of an abandoned newborn has changed.

Lt. Aldred Days says the Tuesday incident is now being handled as a "rescue run."

Police had first reported that officers responded to a residence about 3 a.m. on a report of a newborn abandoned outside. Officers say they found the baby inside when they arrived and discovered the mother is a 17-year-old girl. Investigators say she told them she didn't know she was pregnant and panicked.

According to some reports, she said that she thought she was simply going to the restroom to have a bowel movement.

Days says there were no arrests. The child and mother were taken to Wheaton Franciscan Medical Center.
