Washburn's Jeff Jones Has Chance To Be A Star
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Friday is all about football in Minnesota during the high school sports season, and there is one player in Minneapolis who is getting plenty of attention.
Washburn sophomore running back Jeffrey Jones also figures to get a lot more attention as the season goes along. He scored three touchdowns last week in a victory, and plans on scored a whole lot more before he is done with his high school career.
That's a good plan since he still has plenty of season left this year, and two more years to go. Washburn coach Giovan Jenkins knew by watching him play early on, he had a good one coming.
"Jeff Jones is a special talent. He's a kid that, from day one we've known he was going to be good," Jenkins said. "He had 68 touchdowns as an eighth grader on his park board team. He's a kid that can do it all."
He's on track for some impressive numbers this season because he has the ability to make people miss. He can find the end zone because he loves playing at Washburn on the football field. He loves the game and has a passion for the pigskin.
"It's like in my soul. Since I was born I've loved football to death," said Jones. "It's just a passion, I couldn't live without it."
The football field is his playground and his teammates are what make it special to be a standout football player on a pretty good team.
"It's not just a football team, it's like a family," Jones said. "It's a family thing because you know the person next to you always has your back off and on the field."
He's earning his way to what he hopes is a college future, and he's committed to doing whatever it takes to get there.
"He lifts weights every morning. He'll wake up, he'll call me and see if we can get into the weight room," Jenkins said. "I pick him up and bring him over, he ends up hitting the weights pretty hard. He trains like a junior or a senior and knows what's ahead of him. He wants to play big-time college football, and in order to do that you have to prepare your body."
The Millers are 2-0 and host Waseca Friday night.
