Crews spend hundreds of hours prepping Target Field for Twins' home opener
Preparations were underway Thursday at Target Field as the Minnesota Twins got ready for their home opener. Team officials described a sense of anticipation building behind the scenes.
"Excitement. It's the best time of the year," said Matt Hodson, the team's business communications director.
Crews have been working extensively to prepare the ballpark for fans, putting in hundreds of hours to ensure everything is ready.
"Over 700 labor hours of cleaning, hanging new signage, some of that's still going on today. So you have that last adrenaline push, the last 24 hours to get this place looking spotless and ready to go," Hodson said.
Fans attending opening day can expect a full day of fun, beginning with a breakfast on the plaza from 6 to 9 a.m., followed by live music, a pregame party, a $2 happy hour and promotional giveaways. Hodson said the focus is on creating a memorable experience for the fans.
"They're the heartbeat, they're the soul of this place. It changes from a concrete building to a living, breathing place and it's awesome. I mean, it's giving me chills right now thinking about seeing those smiles on fans," he said.
Weather conditions may be less than perfect, but the team says that won't challenge the excitement.
In fact, a little rain could benefit the ballpark. The stadium is equipped with a rainwater recycling system that collects and filters rainfall for cleaning and keeping the grass green.
"Not a bad thing at all. We don't mind a little rain," Hodson said. "Since the ball park opened, we've recycled 20 million gallons of rainwater."
Despite unpredictable weather, the team expects a strong turnout from fans, recognizing the ballpark's role as a gathering place for all Minnesotans.
"Target field is the great uniter for Minnesotans. It's a place to come and for two and a half, three hours, put aside differences, set aside your worries, be entertained, watch baseball, just have a good time together," Hodson said.
