ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) -- Hours after putting out the flames of a recycling plant fire, St. Paul firefighters are trying to keep others from igniting. Saturday marks the end of Fire Prevention Week.

Three St. Paul fire stations held open houses with live-flame demonstrations in a kitchen setting. Cooking fires are the most common type in Minnesota.

This year, the focus is on making sure each home has a working smoke detector.

"We start to see people, as it starts getting cold, using other means for heating their homes," Bethany Brunsell of the St. Paul Fire Department said. "When people decide to use an oven, it can have a disastrous effect. So people should never use an oven or a stove to heat their home."

Along with the "do" and "don't" lessons of fire prevention, families also got the chance to meet their local firefighters.
