MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- St. Paul police and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension are investigating two separate shootings Wednesday evening -- one involving the city's 28 homicide of the year.
The first shooting happened at about 3:30 p.m. on the 100 block of East Annapolis Street, on the city's border with West St. Paul. Sources tell WCCO two teens were playing with a gun inside the home when it went off, killing one of them. The victim is a Henry Sibley High School senior who was on the football team.
St. Paul police say officers arrived at the residence to find the teen suffering from at least one gunshot wound to his upper body. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Several others were inside the home at the time, and they are being interviewed by investigators. No one has been arrested. It is not clear if this shooting was accidental or intentional.
WCCO spoke with Stephen Sorenson, a neighbor of the boy, about recent violence in the city.
"I think it's really disturbing there's a lot of shooting going on this year. You know, I think this is a good neighborhood. I know most of the neighbors around here, and we moved in just a couple years ago. So overall I would say that there's something that needs to be solved here pretty quickly," Sorenson said.
The second shooting was reported at the Holiday gas station on the 500 block of East 7th Street, near Interstate 94 and Highway 52. The BCA says this was an officer-involved shooting, and the person who was shot suffered non-life threatening injuries. No officers were hurt.
The U.S. Marshals Service says a deputy in their department was involved in the shooting. They released this statement Wednesday night to WCCO:
The U.S. Marshals are aware of a shooting incident involving at least one deputy U.S. marshal near a gas station in the St. Paul area tonight. The incident will be investigated by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. The U.S. Marshals Service is cooperating fully with the official review.
A source tells WCCO the deputy just happened to be at the gas station when the crime occurred, and they opened fire on a suspect.
Police say 135 people have been shot in St. Paul in 2019.
