New St. Croix Bridge Superstructure Work To Begin
STILLWATER, Minn. (AP) — Work begins soon on the superstructure of the new four-lane highway bridge over the St. Croix River connecting Minnesota and Wisconsin.
The Minnesota and Wisconsin departments of transportation this week approved a $332.5 million contract with the Lunda/Ames Joint Venture to build the St. Croix Crossing bridge superstructure.
Lunda/Ames plans to start pile-driving in mid-December at seven pier locations on the Minnesota side. The piers will support the Highway 36 approach bridge and ramp bridges that connect to the main river crossing.
Pile-driving at that location will continue through May 2014. Bridge construction will continue through 2016.
The $629 million span is scheduled to open in 2016, and will replace the old Stillwater Lift Bridge. The lift bridge will become part of a hiking and biking trail.
