Lawmakers Move Forward On Real ID Complaint Bill

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Minnesota lawmakers are moving forward on a bill to comply with the new federal Real ID law.

It means changing everybody's driver's license in the state to newer, high security versions, and it would not allow Minnesotans to opt out.

The federal government ordered the new Real ID's after 9-11. Until now, Minnesota is one of only four states that hadn't complied with the requirement.

The Republican House bill sets an Oct. 1 start date for the change-over to the new licenses.

Without any changes, two years from now, Minnesota's driver's licenses would not work to board a plane or enter federal buildings.
