Kwanzaa Celebration Kicks Off At Minnesota History Center

ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) -- The African-American celebration of Kwanzaa kicked off at the Minnesota History Center.

The holiday has been honored for nearly 50 years. Each day of Kwanzaa is dedicated to seven basic principles focusing on family, and reconnecting with community and African culture.

The feast is a time for music, dance and crafts.

"I think it's different for every family," Marie Michael of Minneapolis said at the event. "For me personally, I think it's important that it's time that we spend together and talk about what the values mean to us, and who we want to be individually and as a family. And also, It's creating the tradition of what Kwanzaa means for our family. So every family's tradition for kwanzaa is different."

Saturday marks the first day of the Kwanzaa celebration. It goes through New Year's Day.
