Help Fight Hunger With Second Harvest Heartland

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Thursday is Hunger Action Day around the country, meaning you'll see plenty of people wearing orange in an effort to fight hunger.

Orange is the national color to raise awareness about fighting hunger. Officials with Second Harvest Heartland in Golden Valley are leading the cause in the Twin Cities.

September is Hunger Action Month across the country. Bob Chatmas, the chief operating officer with Second Harvest Heartland, said hunger is prevalent in Minnesota and western Wisconsin. He said statistics show that 10 percent of people in the Twin Cities and Minnesota is in danger of missing at least one meal per day.

That number includes kids, seniors and families. The campaign is all about raising the awareness for hunger locally so we can fight it. Chatmas said other than wearing orange to show your support, you can volunteer with Second Harvest Heartland throughout September. Bremer bank is also participating by donating $5 for every hour of volunteering, up to $50,000.

You can also donate canned goods or fresh produce to your local food shelf. Chatmas said Second Harvest Heartland is especially in need of canned goods and produce with its health and nutritional value.
