FDA Warns Dog Owners Of Common Sweetening Agent
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The FDA is warning pet owners to keep sweet treats away from their four legged friends.
Xylitol is a sweeting agent found in things like sugarless gum, breath mints and some baked goods.
The sweetener is safe for humans, but not for dogs. If dogs ingest it, xylitol can create a potent release of insulin, which could be life-threatening.
Poisoning symptoms include vomiting, decreased activity, incoordination and seizures.
