Grand Cafe

Grand Cafe is a beautiful restaurant, and fittingly, the biscuits and gravy looks as though it's popped right out of a picture and onto your plate. But, more importantly, the dish tastes even better than it look. The restaurant keeps it simple, with flaky biscuits and sausage gravy with two eggs any way you want them, but Grand Cafe is known for taking American classics and adding that little something extra to make it a whole new experience. Sunday brunch will never be the same.

Tiny Diner

The place lives up to its name; it's not large, but the portions certainly are. The mushroom gravy that comes on top of two buttermilk biscuits is, in a word, divine, and if you're feeling extra hungry, you can add country sausage for just $2 more. Or you can go the reverse; vegetarians can enjoy this comfort food as well, with biscuits and gravy made completely fauna-free. There is certainly no sacrifice in flavor or satisfaction. Tiny Diner seems to be perfect for just about everyone, if you can find a seat.

The Buttered Tin has been around only for a couple of years, but its the kind of place that feels like its been there forever. Thankfully, the restaurant recently took over the restaurant next door and doubled its seating capacity. This is good news for anyone who has ever tried to get a seat on the weekend, especially when the St. Paul Farmer's Market is in full swing a block away. And while the spectacular biscuits in sausage gravy have always been worth the wait, you'll now have much better luck finding a seat quickly when you've got a hankering for some of the very best brunch in the capitol city.

Colossal Cafe
1340 Grand Ave.
St Paul, MN 55105

The original Colossal Cafe, in Minneapolis, was actually about the same size (or smaller) of the aforementioned Tiny Diner. The restaurant has since spread, adding locations in St. Pau's St. Anthony Park neighborhood and on St. Paul's, Grand Avenue that are a little larger. Really, what "colossal" seems to refer to is the flavor of the gravy. The rich, almost decadent gravy covering the flaky biscuits like a savory blanket is a must-have experience no matter which of the three locations you find yourself at.

The homemade sausage gravy might be one the best gravys on this list, made better only by the impossibly light biscuit. It's a delicious meal, and so filling you might not even want to bother with the hashbrowns that come on the side. Hazel's tag line is "Real Good Food," and there is really no better way to sum it up. Added bonus: You don't have to wait until weekend brunch; the restaurant serves breakfast every day of the week.
