Eyewitness: Deputy shot man after fight in Red Wing park 02:01

RED WING, Minn. – A deputy shot and wounded a man in a Red Wing park Tuesday afternoon following a car crash.

The Goodhue County Sheriff's Office says a deputy found a vehicle damaged from a crash in Bay Point Park just after 1 p.m. He saw a man walking away from the crash, and called Red Wing police for assistance.

Before officers arrived, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension says "a struggle ensued and the deputy shot the man."

Diners at Kelly's Tap Bar & Grill watched the incident unfold from the booths near the window that overlook the park. Mitchell Anderson is the manager.

"Someone yelled, 'There's a fight!' So I ran over, and at that time they were on the ground rolling around," Anderson said. "The cop got up off the ground. We saw him draw his weapon as the guy was continuously like walking towards him. And then the guy just dropped down ... I don't know if a Taser would've even done anything, the guy was very large."

The man is being treated at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester and the BCA says he is expected to survive.

The deputy suffered minor injuries in the encounter and was treated and released from an area hospital.

The BCA, which is leading the investigation, says there is no body camera or dash cam footage of the encounter.
