A Utah prosecutor said Ted Bundy was responsible for killing 17-year-old Melissa Ann Smith in 1974, a death that had long been listed as a cold case.
Police have identified similarities in some of the killings but said they had not found conclusive evidence that the same person or people were responsible.
Rex Heuermann was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the series of murders known as the Gilgo Beach serial killings.
Police said forensic testing and genetic genealogy identified Kenneth Smith as the person who killed two women in the 1980s and a third woman in the 1990s.
The victims were carrying large amounts of cash or had recently come into a substantial amount of money, according to court documents.
The shootings came on the same day Los Angeles officials announced they believed a serial killer was responsible for the killings of three homeless men in their city.
