A student at Miramar High School was arrested Monday morning after allegedly bringing a gun onto campus, according to police.

In a message to parents, Principal Winfred Porter said the school's security team found and confiscated the weapon after it triggered a metal detector. It was in the possession of an 11th-grade student.

"I want to assure you this situation did not involve any threats toward our school, students, or staff," Porter said. "The student will face appropriate school disciplinary measures."

Miramar police said the gun was not loaded and the student did not have any ammunition on him. He was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm on school property.

During questioning, the teen told police the gun belonged to his father and claimed he was unaware it was in his possession, according to the arrest report. Investigators said they contacted the teen's parents, and both denied owning or having access to guns.

Porter reminded parents that school safety is everyone's responsibility and encouraged them to talk to their children about the severe consequences of bringing weapons or other banned items onto school campuses.
