Two people found dead inside burning Miami-Dade home near Kendall, authorities say

A two-alarm fire ripped through a home in Southwest Miami-Dade early Friday, prompting a massive response from firefighters and leading to the discovery of two people dead inside, authorities said.

The blaze broke out in a home around 10800 SW 67th Drive, near Kendall. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said 18 fire units were dispatched to the scene to bring the intense flames under control.

While battling the fire, crews discovered two people inside the home. The identities of the victims have not been released, and police are working to determine whether foul play was involved.

Authorities said the fire may have started after a lit cigarette ignited a bed, though the official cause remains under investigation.

There were some dramatic radio transmissions from dispatchers right after the fire erupted.

"Single-family home with smoke showing at the front door," one dispatcher said. "There are vehicles outside. Looks like a cigarette on a bed. Son's see any active flame out."

"Second alarm, we will send you additional units as well," added another dispatcher.

CBS News Miami was at the scene and saw family members of the victims asking authorities for answers after the blaze broke out at the home.

"Once the fire was extinguished, it was determined that two unidentified victims were deceased inside the residence," Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office detective and spokeswoman Samantha Choon told CBS News Miami. "The Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office Arson Squad and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue are conducting parallel investigations into the cause of the fire."

Choon said it would be up to the Miami-Dade Medical Examiner's Office to determine how the two people died.

Neighbor Laurie Mauldin said she's hoping to find out how this happened.

"I feel really bad for these people. There's a family over there and we don't know what is going on. I hope they didn't lose anyone in the family," Mauldin said. "I would like to know if these people are going to be OK. This is a good neighborhood and everybody cares about each other. Oh, my kids are close to all the neighbors here and we just don't know what is going on over there."

Bill Lozano, another neighbor, told CBS News Miami that "within minutes, fire rescue was there and everything."

"The house caught on fire very well, but they contained it very quickly," he said. "It is tragic. This has never happened before and I have been here since 1971."
