Sports Agenda For Wednesday (5/23/12)
Big Story:
Hmm, let's see how can I phrase this succinctly….I think I shall quote a former WWE wrestler and FSU star named Ron Simmons about the Heat…."DAMN!" Plus, the Marlins keep winning in May. What in the wild, wild world of sports is going on?!?
Quote of the Day:
"Cinderella story. Outta nowhere. A former greenskeeper, now, about to become the Masters champion. It looks like a mirac... It's in the hole! It's in the hole! It's in the hole!" – Bill Murray as Carl Spackler in Caddyshack.
Miami Heat: (off Wednesday)
Finally…..the Heat have come back….to Miami.
Okay, so it's not exactly The Rock, but man they layeth the smacketh down on the Pacers last night.
That was about as complete a performance as the Heat could have, so let's dive in and check some numbers.
The Heat had the edge in fast break points, 22-2.
Nice.
Wade and James combined for 58 points.
Battier, Udonis, and Joel Anthony combined for 30 points.
The only person who didn't score but played was big Dexter Pittman.
LeBron was just toying with the Pacers all night long and letting D-Wade get involved.
What I saw last night was LeBron facilitating the play of the entire team and D-Wade fully settled in as the second option.
And what about the defense….it was swarming all night long and I was just stunned at how good it was.
They held Indiana to 33.7 percent shooting, 28 percent from behind the arc, forced 9 turnovers, and dominated the defensive glass by a 49-35 margin and a 42-22 margin on the defensive glass.
Last night, I saw the offense that started the season which was Oregon's football offense on steroids.
The Heat crashed the boards, got in transition, and just killed the Pacers before the bigs of Roy Hibbert and David West could get back down the court.
That said, I fully expect Udonis Haslem and possibly Mike Miller to get suspended for Game 6 in Indiana.
Udonis really crushed, I think it was Tyler Hansbrough, and got a flagrant 1 for it.
I fully expect it to be upgraded to a flagrant 2, though if the NBA is smart, they'll let it go.
Look, the NBA wants Boston and Miami in the Eastern Conference Finals and they ultimately want Miami versus the West's best.
Speaking of, I'm taking the Spurs over the Thunder. My man Timmahh Duncan is still the best all around player not named LeBron in the NBA.
So what can we take away from Game 5?
The Heat's reserves can hold up with the Pacers starters.
That's always a good thing.
If the Heat crash the boards and can get in transition, no one in the East can stop them.
Udonis Haslem has rediscovered his shot and that's a great thing for the Heat.
D-Wade looks like he's got no ill effects on his jumper from his knee problem.
But D-Wade needs to seriously hit the free throw shooting practice today.
I think it's just a question of getting his legs into his free throws. He tends to shoot a free throw in almost a straight line with no arc, so lots of misses can come in a hurry there.
And looky what the Heat found with Chalmers, 8 points, 11 rebounds, 3 assists. Not bad little man, not bad at all.
Now you get to do it all over again, but have to do it in Indiana.
If Miami knocks off the Pacers, we'll long remember that Game 3 as a tipping point in the playoff run.
Some of the best teams have to face serious adversity at least once before they realize they have to step up their game to another level to succeed.
We'll see if that's what happened to Miami.
Miami Marlins: (vs. Colorado Rockies, 7:10 p.m.)
The hottest team in baseball continued to pour it on last night as they came back from a deficit to take out the Colorado Rockies.
The Fish are 16-5 in the month of May and have a very winnable series coming up against the Giants.
But we'll really get a feel for the Fish when they battle the Nationals starting Monday.
The Nats have been in first place most of the young season and the Marlins would love nothing more than to end the month of May with a series victory.
Kudos to Ricky Nolasco as well for becoming the all-time winningest pitcher in Marlins history.
He overtook Dontrelle Willis with his victory Tuesday night.
And, Heath Bell saved another game last night….I guess these guys just thought the season started in May instead of April.
