Sports Agenda For Wednesday (5/11/11)
Big Story:
A few things going on today, most notably, it's Game 5 of the Eastern Conference semifinals and the Heat have a golden opportunity to put the final nail in the coffin of the Boston Celtics tonight at the AmericanAirlines Arena.
Plus, the Dolphins again prove why they're a shameful organization, and the Marlins gained a game on the Phillies.
On to the agenda!
Heat: (vs. Boston Celtics, 7:00 p.m., TNT)
The Heat look to eliminate the Celtics and move on to the Eastern Conference finals tonight at the AAA.
For the Heat, especially LeBron and D-Wade, overcoming the Celtics may be the biggest hurdle to the NBA Finals. The Celtics have been a proverbial thorn in the side of LeBron and D-Wade for several years, and as I wrote on CBSMiami.com yesterday, this could be the chance to finally Exorcise The Demons.
Tonight, the Celtics are going to come out fighting and will go down fighting. I don't mean fighting as in Los Angeles Lakers fighting, but I wouldn't be surprised if someone on the Celtics does go after Wade with a serious hack in tonight's game.
For the Celtics to have any hopes of winning, they have to get Kevin Garnett involved down on the block. If KG isn't getting the ball in the low post area and then converting, the Celtics are dead in the water. Without KG working down low, the Celtics will have major problems because the offense goes through him.
On the same hand, it's a credit to Chris Bosh, who has shut KG down, with the exception of Game 3. Bosh has played stellar defense against KG and has been instrumental in the Heat having a 3-1 lead in the series.
For the Heat, they just have to continue playing suffocating defense. I think it got to D-Wade that he wasn't selected to the All-Defense team and he, along with LeBron have turned up the defensive intensity to a whole new level.
The Heat really need to close this series out tonight because the last thing you want is to go back to Boston with the Celtics gaining momentum trying to come from behind.
The Heat can close it out, and watch the crowd tonight when Udonis Haslem is put in the game, it should be electric.
Marlins: (vs. Philadelphia Phillies, 7:10 p.m., Fox Sports Florida)
Well, it took an error to put the Marlins over the top, but a win is a win, especially against a pitcher like Roy Halladay. The Phillies ace pitched a complete game, but the unearned run on an error sealed the fate of the Phils. Josh Johnson didn't get the win, but he pitched himself out of trouble several times in the second and third innings to help lift the Fish.
But, it doesn't get any easier for the Fish because the Phils throw another Cy Young winner at the Marlins tonight when Cliff Lee takes the mound to face Ricky Nolasco.
Lee is 2-3 on the season with a 3.69 ERA. Nolasco is 3-0 with a 3.23 ERA. Both pitchers went 7 innings in their last start, with Lee taking a loss and Nolasco getting a no decision. Both guys average about 6 innings per game, so it will likely be up to the bullpens. In that case, the Marlins have a great shot if the bats can continue to wake up.
Hanley Ramirez is starting to hit and has raised his average to .208. While that's better, it's still woefully low for a hitter in the 3 spot of the lineup.
NFL Update:
The Miami Dolphins have decided to do a hatchet job to the salaries of workers who are among the lowest paid in the organization. In a cheapskate, shameful decision, the team cut the salaries of those making $75,000 by 20 percent, those making between $50k and $75k by 15 percent and those making $50,000 by 10 percent.
The team cited bad season ticket sales due to the lockout as the problem.
Yeah. Right.
Okay, a few things here:
First, the season ticket sales wouldn't be lagging if the organization ever put a consistent winning product on the field. There is no buzz around the Fins, but it's not just because of the lockout. It's because the organization is run so poorly from the top down. Whenever you try to lockup a facility like that and treat the fans and the media poorly, you shouldn't be surprised if fans eventually start to revolt.
Sky-high ticket prices for a poor product is always a disaster. Plus, why would fans want to watch a team who will lose their head coach and general manager in a year, if not two.
Second, you're trying to tell your workers that a team worth close to $1 billion is having trouble meeting its bills and has to cut back? And then not having the guts to tell the public that you will reinstate the workers' salaries and give them back pay? The overpaid multi-million dollar players will get back pay, but you're playing coy about giving the grunts back pay?
That's just shameful.
But, it's typical of the GREED of corporate America in this day and age. Corporations, in every business, know they can squeeze employees to the breaking point because there are no jobs and people can't leave. Just really pathetic and it's sanctioned under the umbrella of good for business by the GOP and others.
Again, it's just shameful.
If the Fins give the back pay to the employees, then I will give them credit. But as of now, fans should tell the Dolphins to stick it and enjoy some college football.
Yknow, the lockout has been disgraceful all the way around from the NFL to the NFLPA. This decision just reinforces the fact that the NFL truly is the No Fun League.
