Sports Agenda for Wednesday (2/29/12)

Big Story:
Wow, it's been kinda slow this week as the Heat have been off, but that changes tomorrow night. We have the Panthers who really, really LOVE Canada. The Dolphins are batting their eyelashes at Peyton Manning. And the Canes are in a must-win game at NC State.
Lyrics of the day:
"Independence limited, freedom of choice is made for you my friend. Freedom of speech is words they bend. Freedom with their exception."

Panthers: (off Wednesday)
Look out, but the Panthers are 3-0-1 in their last four games.
The Cats got hot last night and beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-3.
I don't know about you, but maybe Florida should play more of their games in Canada.
They are 11-2-2 this season in Canada.
That's pretty darned good and bodes well for the team as they fight with Winnipeg for first place in the southeast division.
Now the bad news, they only play two more games in Canada.
Whoops.
But, Florida is 15-8-8 at home, so they've got that going for them.
More good news for the Cats, even if they dropped out of third place right now, they would still make the playoffs based on having 72 points this season.
But the margin is razor thin with Washington and Winnipeg nipping at their heels.
Needless to say, it's going to be one heckuva ride in the final full month of the regular season.
16 games in March and they start Thursday.

Miami Dolphins:
For those that didn't read my article yesterday on the Peyton Manning/Reggie Wayne deal, shame on you.
Just kidding.
Here's the link though: http://miami.cbslocal.com/2012/02/28/report-manning-wayne-may-be-package-deal/
I'll break it down for you here…
Peter King of SI.com said that Peyton Manning and wide receiver Reggie Wayne may go to a new team as a package deal.
Sounds good right?
The only problem for the Dolphins?
That pesky thing called the salary cap.
See the Fins are running up against the salary cap this year.
Before changing any contracts, the Fins have about $112 million in salaries already committed out of a $120 million salary cap (estimated)
The Fins carried over $9 million in cap room from last year.
That gives them around $17 million in cap space for this year.
Take about $6 million out of that for the rookie salary pool.
Now you have approximately $11 milion in cap space.
Hmmm…
If you restructure Brandon Marshall's $11.4 million cap hit and Karlos Dansby's $11.33 million cap hit, you might free up around 4-5 million more.
So the Fins could possibly enter the new NFL calendar in a few weeks with between $11 and $17 million in cap space.
Now, you have to convince Manning to a heavily incentive laden deal and convince Wayne to play for not much.
Do that, and you might have enough money to add a free agent defensive lineman.
Of course that's all assuming you could restructure Jake Long, Brandon Marshall, or Karlos Dansby.
Combined, those three cost nearly $35 million against the salary cap…ouch.
So the Fins are going to have to get the capologist out and really figure out a way to finesse the system to land Manning, Wayne, and more offensive and defensive line help.
But, if you go for Manning and get him, you save valuable draft picks that can also fill holes on the team quickly and cheaply.
It's gonna be a fun ride in the coming weeks.

Miami Hurricanes Basketball: (@ NC State, 9 p.m.)
Well, the Canes are in a big-time must-win game tonight in Raleigh.
With a win, Miami could bolster its chances of getting into the NCAA tournament with an at-large bid as the Canes would be 9-6 in the tough ACC.
They also just got Reggie Johnson reinstated, which is always good for rebounding and guarding other team's bigs.
A loss will likely kill Miami's tournament chances and send them to the NIT….again.
No pressure there huh.
The Canes and Wolfpack are pretty evenly matched overall and their records are almost exactly the same.
We'll know more about the Canes by the end of the night.
Just an aside…wouldn't it be cool if Miami and Mizzou ended up playing each other in the NCAA Tourney?
Old coach versus new coach…the battle of UM and MU.
Course Miami has to pull it off first to get into the tournament.
We'll see if the Canes can do that or if they're just full of hot air.
