Sports Agenda for Wednesday (10/3/12)
Big Story:
The Dolphins add some wide receiver help that I think may be a big help. The biggest news out of Heat camp is D-Wade leaving Team Jordan. The Marlins Park failure. Plus, I get called on the carpet for being disingenuous about the Marlins yesterday.
Quote of the Day:
"The first panacea for a mismanaged nation is inflation of the currency; the second is war. Both bring a temporary prosperity; both bring a permanent ruin. But both are the refuge of political and economic opportunists." – Ernest Hemingway
Politics:
A quick political aside here.
I loathe cable news and the shouting fest it basically is. But sometimes I really get a good laugh out of it.
Last night was a good example how partisanship can come back to bite you.
I give you Fox News last night.
It started with the Drudge Report, which is usually step one for conservative craziness. (remember Condoleeza Rice as VP?)
Anyways, Drudge throws up his sirens signaling breaking news and claims to have an explosive video of Obama that had serious racial overtones.
Step 2, Sean Hannity, whose greatest asset is hair that would make Jimmy Johnson jealous, jumps on it and partners with the Tucker Carlson led Daily Caller, who has said video.
Step 3, Drudge puts up a quote or two and teases ahead to Hannity who teases an exclusive with the Daily Caller.
The trap is set. The conservatives have their 47 percent video to attack the president and turn the attention away from Mitt Romney's historic gaffe.
Oh, there's just one problem.
You can search google images, which bloggers did, and posted the video ahead of time. (Oops.)
As in, they posted it in 2008 when it first made news and was publicly covered by everyone…including Fox News.
At that point, most news agencies would back off and say, oops. Still run the story, but bury it in the show.
Not Fox News.
They've been harping on it all night and into the morning show, which if you ever needed a laugh, mangles more facts than a drunk history professor. Check out the SNL spoof of it, pretty spot on.
It made me smile. Not because of my personal political leanings either way.
But what made me laugh was that a partisan "news" organization, with a partisan blog, and a partisan news aggregator tried to create something out of nothing and it ended up blowing up in their face.
Miami Dolphins:
Back to Sports….
The Fins signed Jabar Gaffney last night and I think it's a good signing.
The veteran played extremely well last year in Washington with truly awful quarterbacks throwing him the football.
If he can assimilate the playbook quickly, he's a solid receiver to have out there and a good route runner.
He could likely slide into the number two receiver role and let Bess be the slot receiver beast that he is.
Now if only the Fins had a dynamic tight end who could catch the ball and block, we'd have a legit offense in Miami!
By the way, the Dolphins run defense has just been absurd.
They are averaging like 2.3 yards per rush allowed, which if the season ended today would set the all-time mark.
If only we could get the second pass-rusher to ease the burden on Cameron Wake a little.
Marlins:
If you want to know how much of a disaster the Marlins have been this year and will remain as long as Jeffrey Loria and David Samson are in charge….
Consider this.
The Marlins in a nearly fully-taxpayer funded stadium drew the fewest fans to a new ballpark of any team since 2001. (Including the typically god-awful Pirates)
As of Tuesday, the Marlins said their home attendance was 2,162,317.
Given that they had a total of two sellouts all season long…what I would like to know is do those numbers count season ticket holders and if they do, what would the numbers be of the actual tickets scanned through the gates. My guess is it would be much lower.
So the Marlins said build us this new stadium, we'll put a winner on the field and butts in the stands.
They failed at building a winner and are going to cut payroll the next year, because that's what Loria does.
They failed to draw their goal attendance by 500,000.
The only people who failed worse were the taxpayers who ended up having to finance the $2.4 billion stadium that may never house a winner with the current group of executives in house.
Marlins, Part II:
Okay, so yesterday, I was trying to be nice to the Marlins and Adam Greenberg and gave them kudos.
A few hours later, my colleague Jason wrote a blog blasting the marlins as being disingenuous about the whole thing. He then came to me and said, so which is it what you wrote earlier about it or what I said.
Truth be known, a little part of me thought it was sappy enough.
But, here's what I thought last week when it came down.
My initial comment, "this is such a b.s. story."
Why you ask?
Because there are thousands of players who dream of playing in the big leagues, even some who get called up and never get an at-bat, what makes this kid so different?
Plus, why would the Marlins do this?
Easy, they are reviled by so many that they were willing to do anything to get some good publicity to turn the attention off the mess this franchise has become.
So, sensing an opportunity for good p.r., the team jumped and that's the only reason they did it.
Now, every player that maybe got one at-bat or was set to be called up to the majors only for extenuating circumstances cancelling it, should get their at-bats too.
That means sometime by the year 2014, we'll have real major league action again on the field instead of things like this.
Look, I get it. Miami was out of the playoffs, so what difference does it make?
Well, if that's the case, how about bringing in the best little league player to play the outfield for a game to give him a chance?
Look it was a p.r. move to save face for a team that is the most poorly-run franchise in South Florida.
The team has been regarded as a joke for most of the season and will continue to be that in the offseason as well.
It's just now, they're a joke with a heart. Good for them.
That's my honest opinion on it.
That's it for today, more football previews coming tomorrow.
