Sports Agenda For Wednesday (9/7/11)
Big Story:
It's kind of slow on the local front, unless you count the Marlins losing as a big story, which we don't. But, today could be a pivotal day in the future of major college football.
It's on like Ndamukong in today's agenda!
Firsties/College Football:
If you're a fan of college football, you need to pay attention today to CBSMiami.com/sports.
Today is D-day for this year's round of college football expansion.
Texas A&M will find out if they will be accepted into the Southeastern Conference at some point today.
Once that first domino falls, it might unleash conference Armageddon.
Here's how things stand:
A&M is gone from the Big XII, likely to the SEC, as of Wednesday.
Oklahoma and Oklahoma State are openly flirting with two other conferences, one of which is the Pac-12.
Both OU and OSU are sick of the University of Texas' heavy-handedness in the Big XII and are not tied to Texas for where they end up.
Texas has flirted with the Pac-12 in the past, but now that it has the Longhorn Network, that could pose a problem.
Texas won't be allowed to have their own network in the Pac-12, but could keep the Network as a regional network, but would have to share proceeds with someone like Texas Tech, who would come with Texas to the Pac-12.
Confused yet?
But wait, there's more.
OU and OSU will want to move quickly to a new conference and when OU moves, the Big XII is dead.
That means teams like Missouri, Baylor, Kansas, Kansas State, and Iowa State need new homes.
Plus, there's always the possibility OU could be targeting the SEC.
Currently, Mizzou, Kansas, and Kansas State are rumored to be prime targets for the Big East.
Mizzou isn't tied to anyone, but Kansas and K-State would likely follow the Tigers if possible.
Geographically, Mizzou would be a better fit in the Big Ten +2, but that would require the Big Ten+2 to bring in another team, which they're not keen on right now.
If Mizzou, UK, KSU all moved to the Big East, it would immediately boost the conference in football and make Mizzou and TCU the favorites every year for the Big East football title.
Remember too, if the SEC welcomes in A&M…it would make sense for them to add a 14th team.
That means the SEC will have to raid the ACC or Big East to add the 14th team.
That means the ACC or Big East will have to replace teams and things get even crazier.
It will all start at some point today when A&M is welcomed into the SEC, Probably.
Once that happens, it's on like Donkey Kong and every team is out for themselves.
Marlins: (vs. New York Mets, 5:10 p.m., Fox Sports Florida)
The Fish have just seven games left at Sun Life Stadium.
They have the chance to win exactly three, maybe four of them.
They could theoretically beat the Mets today, though not likely.
Then they will lose three in a row to the Braves most likely.
But the Fish may be able to close out Sun Life Stadium with some wins against the Nationals from September 26-28.
Oh well, they'll still stink, but they will be in a new ballpark.
