Sports Agenda For Wedneday (2/22/12)
Big Story:
South Florida….are. you. Ready?
Cause Linsanity is coming…It's COMING!!!
We've got a recap of Heat-Kings and a look ahead at Knicks-Heat plus the Panthers are still trying to make waves, the Hurricanes are out of the NCAA Tournament barring a miracle, and anything else that I can find to talk about…
Let's do this….
Heat: (off, next game Thursday vs. New York Knicks, 7 p.m, TNT)
The Heat let the Kings hang around last night and basically toyed with them throughout the game.
It was kind of like watching a cat and mouse.
The Heat would smack the mouse around and then let him run. Then the cat would catch him and smack him around a little more.
Finally the cat got bored and just ate the mouse.
That's about what we saw last night from the Kings, who are so horribly overmatched in this league.
Though it was funny to see Isiah Thomas wreaking havoc against the Heat.
Felt like 1990 again….when I was 12.
Now all the attention of the NBA turns to Thursday's game against the hated New York Knicks and sensation Jeremy Lin.
I don't say this often, but I really, REALLY, hope the Heat beat the ever-living heck out of the Knicks.
Mainly just to shut people up about how good Lin and the Knicks are, but also to prove to the league that the title does go through Miami this year.
Oh who am I kidding, I just have it up to here with Linsanity and want the Heat to just shut it down and shut it up.
It's all going to be on the shoulders of Mario Chalmers, who, after years of basically stinking it up, has turned into a very serviceable point guard.
If Rio can cover Lin and not force LeBron on him, then the Knicks are dead in the water.
Course it would be nice to be able to bring in Pittman to hack a Chandler at some point, but we'll see.
Watch the ball movement in the game, if it stops when it gets to Carmelo, the Knicks are dead in the water.
I think the Heat play to the level of their competition and things have definitely been building for this game.
It's basically bragging rights in the Eastern Conference, but remember this if the Heat lose.
No one in the Eastern Conference will be able to beat this team 4 out of 7 games.
No. one.
So don't go off the deep end Heat fans if things don't play out exactly as planned, just remember, it's all about the playoffs.
Panthers: (off, next game Thursday vs. Minnesota Wild, 7:30 p.m., Fox Sports Florida)
Well, talk about a logjam; that's how best to describe the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference.
Florida and Winnipeg are tied at 65 points and the Washington Capitals are just 2 points behind at 63 points.
And don't look now, but the Lightning are charging (see what I did there?) and are just 5 points back.
Heading into the final month of the regular season, the Panthers are in deep trouble and have to get out of the current funk they are in.
They're playing a bad Minnesota team they should be able to beat, but given how the Cats are playing recently, nothing's a given.
But, the next two games this weekend are against the worst teams in the Southeast and Northeast divisions, so wins should be able to be found.
Should be.
As we've seen, the Cats are 0-3 over their last three games and are in desperation need of a victory.
I'm still not convinced this team has the scoring punch to do it.
Want proof?
Of all the division leaders, the Panthers are the only team to have given up more goals than they've scored this season.
Really, really ugly stat there.
It's not going to matter much, the Stanley Cup is going through Detroit and that means it's likely going to Detroit.
The Red Wings…yeah, they're just playing stupid at home. 26-2-1? Are you kidding me?
Funny part is, they're below .500 on the road.
Go figure huh.
Miami Hurricanes basketball: (off until Sunday vs. Florida State)
Well, it looks like the Canes may have played their way out of the NCAA Tournament this year.
They went from up 5 to losing by 5 in roughly 90 seconds.
You just can't do that and hope to get into the tournament…especially against this year's Maryland Terrapins.
The Canes only hope right now is to win out the rest of their games and do well in the ACC Tournament.
To do that, they have to beat a quiet, but really good FSU team and then knock off NC State at NC State and beat Boston College at home.
Then have to make it to at least round three of the ACC Tournament.
That I think will get them in, but past that, I don't see it as being very likely they can get into the field of 68? 65? I forget what it's at now.
Too bad, after the big win at Duke, the Canes went into the tank.
Losses at FSU, vs. Carolina, and Maryland will do that to you.
Miami Marlins: (pitchers & catchers report today!)
The pitchers and catchers report to Spring Training today in Jupiter.
How about that?
Let's get a few things out of the way here.
The team will go as far as Josh Johnson can carry them.
I really want to see what he has on his fastball this year.
If it's dropped into the low 90's, he's in deep, DEEP trouble.
I'm also fascinated to see what happens with Carlos Zambrano and Ozzie Guillen.
Talk about combustible elements?
Maybe Guillen can get the best out of Zambrano.
For the Marlins sake, I hope so.
