Sports Agenda for Tuesday (8/21/12)
Big Story:
Obviously, the Dolphins naming Ryan Tannehill the starter is the big news, but how about some college football news and maybe even a Marlins nugget or two all in the agenda today.
Quote of the Day:
"During times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act." – George Orwell
Dolphins:
Well, to the shock of no one who has talked to me in the last week, Ryan Tannehill was officially named the Fins' starting quarterback when the regular season rolls around in two weeks.
It really was a no brainer pick for head coach Joe Philbin.
Tannehill has played better in the preseason and is the future of the franchise.
Miami needs to know by the end of the year if they have a keeper in Tannehill or if they need to go back to square one.
Now, there's a caveat to all of this.
Now that they've made the decision to go with Tannehill, they've got to stick with him.
He's going to absolutely stink at times and will be great at other times.
But the rookie will be learning on the job and the Dolphins will have to be patient with him. They can't be playing ping-pong with the starting quarterback position.
Unless he gets injured, he's your guy for better or worse.
He'll have to pull a 2011 Chad Henne performance to get pulled out from the starting lineup.
The Fins are hoping that he can build a solid relationship with a young offensive line that on the right side had better learn to protect him.
I'm a huge Jonathan Martin fan, but he can't allow defenders to run past him like he did against the Panthers.
If the Dolphins can run the football consistently, it will take a lot of pressure off Tannehill.
In other words, he could be like Matt Ryan or Ben Roethlisberger in their rookie years.
Both had solid ground games and performed well.
But the Fins haven't shown any semblance of a ground game yet and that's got DANGER written all over it heading into the regular season.
But what Roethlisberger had that so far, Tannehill doesn't have is a strong defense.
The Steelers D could cover up any mistakes Roethlisberger made as a young quarterback. That allowed him to grow quickly. Well, that and a cannon for an arm.
Now, the Fins defensive line has close to 1,100 pounds of man in just four guys across the defensive line.
How the Panthers offensive line just manhandled them I can't quite figure out, but it better change PDQ.
Oh yeah, Matt Ryan also had receiver Roddy Jones and Roethlisberger had Hines Ward.
So yes, Tannehill is going to struggle when you are throwing out Legedu Naanee as a starting wideout.
But, on the bright side, the Dolphins should be in prime position to get a starting-caliber receiver in next year's draft, so they've got that going for them.
As we go into Week 3 of the preseason it's time to reveal my prediction for the Dolphins season.
Worst case scenario, 3-13; best case scenario, 6-10.
Unless this defense can come together quickly, I just don't see it as being good enough to stop Tom Brady or the other elite AFC quarterbacks.
Looking for something positive….at least we won't have a Tim Tebow quarterback controversy. I'm looking at you New York!
College Football:
Not that no other conference matters in college football, but you're either in the SEC or Florida or you're not.
So, let's take a quick look at the SEC and Florida schools.
I think FSU can take the ACC fairly easily on their defense alone. That is one NASTY defense that should make fans remember the glory days of the 1990's. Seriously, they may not allow a point through their first three games, at least the first two.
I think Miami is going to struggle to a 6-6 record this year. Just too much youth and inexperience to really make a push towards respectability. I think they're about two solid recruiting classes away from making noise on a national level. Just be patient Canes fans. Al Golden turned Temple into a winner and he will do the same for UM.
UCF, USF, FAU, better luck next year.
Now to the SEC.
I really feel bad for Texas A&M. They finally get into the SEC and are sent to the Western Division. That's just not right.
But, that's life as Mizzou heads to the Eastern Division.
So how will both divisions finish?
Western Division: Eastern Division
1. Alabama 1. South Carolina
2. LSU 2. Florida
3. Arkansas 3. Georgia
4. Auburn 4. Missouri
5. Texas A&M 5. Vanderbilt
6. Mississippi State 6. Tennessee
7. Ole Miss 7. Kentucky
I can already here people now saying Missouri number three? Yeah, I may be nuts, but the Eastern Division is nowhere near as tough as the west and I think Mizzou can at least get to fourth. I think they can beat Georgia to start the season and then will probably lose to South Carolina and Florida in the East.
Alabama, they should really just be a semi-pro team at this point.
Talk about not rebuilding, but reloading.
Saban, whether you like him or not, and I don't, has built one heckuva power house in Tuscaloosa that no one in the SEC can touch right now.
I think it will be Saban and Spurrier in Atlanta for the SEC Championship.
Talk about making it tough to cheer for either one of the teams!
Marlins: @ Arizona, 9:40 p.m.
Believe it or not, the Marlins are still playing and last night they laid the leather to the Diamondbacks.
Miami just pounded them 12-3 last night with Giancarlo Stanton launching two home runs in the game.
The win evened starter Mark Buehrle's record at 11-11, which I believe is the highest number of wins for any Malins starting pitcher.
Stanton has 26 homers on the season along with 65 RBI's and is hitting .288 for the season.
Over his last ten games, Stanton is hitting .306 and has hit 5 homers during that stretch.
He and Jose Reyes are the building blocks for the franchise and if the Marlins can make some wise moves, the team could be back very soon.
Given that it's the Marlins, that may be asking a bit too much.
